Cerkno – »Brdce« – Trebenče – Cerkno (5,25 km; 1,45 h)
The trail leads from Cerkno up Brdce hill and past the monument commemorating the 47 participants in the 6th Communist Party training who lost their lives in the German attack on Cerkno in 1944. Reaching the crossroads after a short ascent, turn left and continue to the farm in Galež, where you can see an old fruit drying kiln along the way. The trail leads into a serene forest filled with birdsong. Enjoying the beautiful view of Porezen, you will be surprised to find that you have already reached Trebenče.
The village is distinguished by the church of St. Joyce, sitting at the top of a hill with charming views. The church was included on a list of churches in the Cerkno region as early as 1595. Some of the building’s original Gothic features have been preserved, despite a Baroque makeover in the 17th century. 15th and 16th century frescoes were uncovered during the renovation. According to legend, a treasure was hidden under the floor at the entrance to the sacristy, but thanks to its memorable appearance and religious mission, the church itself is clearly the biggest treasure to be found here. After crossing the main road, stop for a moment at the chapel along the trail back to Cerkno.
