Overnight stays 2022–2024
In 2022, Cerkno was visited by 18,513 tourists, who generated 55,652 overnight stays. In 2023, arrivals fell to 13,250, and overnight stays to 41,773. In 2024, there were even fewer arrivals – 8917, with a total of 29,964 overnight stays. The main reasons for the decline are increasingly green winters and the closure of Hotel Cerkno, which with 180 beds represented a key provider of accommodation and catering services in the town.
According to a simulation that assumes year-round operation of Hotel Cerkno, the destination would have achieved 55,964 overnight stays in 2024, which would mean even a 1% growth compared to 2022. This data is particularly important, as mountain municipalities in Slovenia are on average recording a 4% drop in overnight stays.
Overnight Stays by Country of Origin
While in 2022 domestic guests represented the majority of visitors (61%), by 2024 their share decreased to less than half. In parallel, the share of foreign guests increased, representing 52% of all visitors in 2024. The largest number come from Germany (an increase of over 1000 visitors in one year), followed by Hungarians, Poles, Italians, and Czechs. We observe a significant decline in guests from Croatia, which can be attributed to shorter skiing seasons, as Croatian guests mostly visited the destination precisely during the skiing season.
Seasonal Distribution of Guests 2022–2024
In Cerkno, we observe a significant increase in tourist visits during the summer months, which is a turnaround compared to past decades when the destination was known primarily for winter tourism. This indicates that the promotion of the destination is successful and that the tourist offer is attractive also during the summer period.
Overnight Stays by Accommodation Capacity
Hotel Cerkno, which operated until April 2024, generated 5870 overnight stays from January to March. The Centre for School and Extracurricular Activities (CŠOD) Cerkno recorded 9856 overnight stays in the same period. It should be emphasized that CŠOD offers accommodation facilities to various target groups, not just children and adolescents – last year there were 7839 overnight stays by children and 2017 overnight stays by adults. Other accommodation providers (apartments, rooms, tourist farms, and campsites) together generated 14,238 overnight stays.
