Cerkno–Straža–Reka–Stopnik–Šebrelje–Church of St. John the Baptist–Šebrelje–Jagršče–Straža–Cerkno
This eventful tour to the site of the world’s oldest musical instrument starts from the centre of Cerkno, along the main road towards Tolmin. After about 5 kilometres of cycling, you will arrive in the village of Straža, where you will turn right at a junction with traffic lights. From here, the road leads you along the picturesque Idrijca River valley for another 8 kilometres. In Stopnik, turn left over a bridge and, after a 4-kilometre steep and winding climb, you rise to the scattered village of Šebrelje on a rugged plateau, embraced by mighty forests. If you want to enjoy the wonderful views, you start from the basic path at the crossroads in the middle of the village – turn left into Dolenja vas, drive past the shop and the playground, continue between the houses and, after a slight descent, follow the signs to the Church of St. John the Baptist. Here you can enjoy a relaxing view of the Idrijca Valley deep below, the rugged surrounding landscape all the way to the rocky Bohinj Mountains, or walk down to the Divje Babe archaeological site, famous for the discovery of the world’s oldest musical instrument, the Neanderthal flute.
Follow the same path back to the crossroads in the village, where you turn left towards Jagršče. Continue to the right along the asphalt road, with a beautiful panorama of the surrounding hills. Cycle past Kurji vrh to the hunting hut at Lasce, where we recommend a stop at a viewpoint overlooking the wild ravines descending towards the Idrijca Valley.
The road then turns into gravel, so keep left up the slope. At the junction in the forest, we have two options – the right turn heads towards Vrhovec or Lokvarski vrh, the highest viewpoint of the Šebrelje plateau (1,079 m), offering an amazing view of the Kobariški stol, the Krn and the Črna prst, the Porezen, the Grintovec and the Kočna mountains. The left turn heads to Jagršče, so you can follow the circular tour trail.
It continues with a 1.5 km long adrenaline descent into a ravine, past the uniquely positioned Pr Jerebu farmhouse. From there, it takes you about 2 km along a fairly flat road to the Pr Močniku farm, where you again take the turning towards Jagršče. Follow the road down through the forest, past the holiday houses to the first chapel, and shortly after to the second chapel, dedicated to the victims of the WWII national liberation struggle. There you can take another break and walk from the chapel across the road, and then through the trees to the viewpoint at the edge of a precipice.
Continue past the picturesque village of Jagršče and follow the winding path for 5 kilometres down to the Idrija–Tolmin main road, turning left and then right at the first traffic lights, in the direction of Cerkno.
