The birthplace of writer France Bevk
Bevk’s homestead, also called “Pri Volarju”, is located in the lower part of the village of Zakojca. This is where writer France Bevk spent his childhood and teenage years. There was a ceremonial opening in 1990 at the 100th anniversary of his birth, when an ethnological and a literary historical exhibition were created in it. The ethnological part presents the typical cottage living environment at the beginning of the 20th century in the Cerkno region, while the second part throws light upon the writer’s life through books, photographs, and other items.
France Bevk, a writer, journalist, and politician, born on 17 September 1890 as the oldest child of a poor cottager family, has left an indelible stamp on the history of the people in the Primorska region. Especially during the most difficult times of his life his works built national awareness and faith in a better future among his fellow Slovenes. His tales and novels often describe places and people under Kojca with whom he spent his childhood and youth.
